At the Barnsley Workshop, we provide high quality training in fine furniture making through our apprenticeship programme. We only take on two or three apprentices a year, to ensure that they can be given individual, tailored tuition in the art of furniture making. The training is designed to nurture the next generation of skilled furniture makers, using the best of modern and traditional methods.
Our apprentices have the opportunity to learn from skilled craftsmen, and also to experience a commercial workshop environment. Our apprentices work on pieces of furniture for our customers. We offer an environment that focuses on craftsmanship, precision, and developing employment skills in a nurturing workshop.
About The Edward Barnsley Educational Trust
The Edward Barnsley Educational Trust, established in 1980, is dedicated to preserving and promoting the craft of handmade furniture making. Operating from Edward Barnsley’s historic Arts and Crafts workshop in rural Hampshire, the Trust offers training programs for aspiring furniture makers, including apprenticeships and fee-paying pupil opportunities.
Beyond woodworking courses, the Trust maintains an adjoining cottage that showcases Barnsley’s furniture and houses an extensive archive of over 4,000 of his drawings, correspondence, and photographs. Funding for the Trust is primarily sourced from the sale of furniture, along with donations and grants from individuals, organisations, and the Friends of the Edward Barnsley Educational Trust.
